What Makes an API Integration Actually Reliable

Ajas Labs Team·June 30, 2026·1 min read

Integration code is often the least tested part of a system, yet it's where external failures hit hardest.

Assume the other side will fail

Every third-party API call should have a defined timeout, retry policy, and fallback behavior. Silent failures are worse than loud ones.

Make writes idempotent

If a payment webhook or CRM sync gets delivered twice, your system should handle that gracefully rather than creating duplicate records.

Log the payload, not just the outcome

When an integration breaks at 2am, the difference between a five-minute fix and a two-hour investigation is usually whether you logged the actual request and response bodies.
